World Teachers’ Day
Thank you to our amazing teaching staff who we celebrated last Thursday as part of World Teachers’ Day. We are fortunate to have a dedicated teaching team, who supported by our entire school staff work to educate all students within our school. A special thanks also to the members of our community who shared their positive messages of thanks to our staff.
Learning Walls
As part of our priority plan in the area of English, we are focussing on the use of ‘Learning Walls’ in our classrooms. We would like to encourage you to talk with your child about what they are learning in English at school and how they can use the Learning Wall to support their learning. In our school the Learning Walls do look different across the year levels and classes but the consistency between them is:
- Co-constructed student-friendly Know and Do chart (WHAT will the students learn about, what will they DO with what they learn about)
- Copy of the assessment task (if appropriate)
- Marking Guide (MG) on what the students will be assessed on- there are no surprises
- An A exemplar (at year level) of what they can achieve and what makes it an ‘A’.
- Vocabulary chart (words used in the unit) and student-friendly glossary
- Co-created examples and annotated student work samples - related to what students are using and can refer back to as they complete their unit of study.
When you are next in school, ask to see your child’s learning wall and have them explain how they use it.
From our implementation of them this year, it has been so exciting to hear of students even creating their own ‘Learning Walls’ at home!
Here are a few examples of Learning Walls currently being used.
Resilient Children- a focus on cybersafety
We have been provided with a wonderful opportunity to host a face to face parenting seminar conducted by ‘Triple P’ here at our school hall on Tuesday 16 November 3:15-4:45pm. The session will also cover cybersafety, which we know is such an important thing as adults to know about, as more of our children are engaging online.
The session can help you:
- Problem-solve with your children how to stay safe and manage risks online
- Support your child’s ability to manage emotional ups and downs
- Manage screen time and set age-appropriate boundaries
- Help your child cope with stress and setbacks and stay positive
Arcade Facility Upgrade
Later this month, we are excited to see the commencement of the extension of the Arcade Block, which is used by both the school and WOSHC. The improvements will include the extension of two bays, insulation (and work to reduce noise produced within the building) and ventilation, all whilst increasing the amount of space available for both school and WOSHC students to use.
Prep Vision Screening
The free and rescheduled Prep Vision Screening will be on Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 November for students who filled in and returned the paperwork earlier this year.
2022 Resource Lists
Please find the following link to access the 2022 Wondall Heights State School resource lists.
As previously communicated in the newsletter, the school has gone with Sequel Books as a preferred resource provider for 2022. Families will be able to order by 3 December 2021 for a December delivery date or by 31 December 2021 for a January delivery date.
There will a $7.95 delivery fee with orders being processed and dispatched as soon as possible. Only 1 delivery fee per family/address (multiple sibling orders only pay one fee per total order, not per pack) and all deliveries are fully tracked via Australia Post. There is also a click and collect option from the Willawong Distribution Centre. More details can be found by clicking the link, above.
Please note the following:
- Although the resource lists are generated through Sequel, families are welcome to take the list to any retail store to buy stationery and books.
- The resource lists are ‘Starter Resource Lists’ in order to supply your child with the essentials to start the new school year and to prevent over ordering. Should new supplies be needed due to usage or loss, a Stationery Request Form will be sent home throughout the year to notify you of items needed to be replaced.
- By now, your child should have brought home a Stationery Inventory Form to give you an indication of the condition of retainable items (e.g. headphones) and excess materials that can be used the following year. We hope this helps to reduce the costs of ordering from the resource lists moving into 2022.
- Please ensure ALL items are labelled and sent in on the first day of the 2022 school year.
Finally, as a goodwill gesture, the school has negotiated a 10% discount to be applied to each Wondall Heights State School Resource List purchased from SequelBooks.com prior to 3 December 2021. The discount will be automatically applied at the checkout within this ordering period.

WMSea Young Writer’s 2021
Congratulations to our 6 young writer’s who, yesterday, became published authors!
The girls spent a day at Newstead House with author Samantha Wheeler, where they were inspired by the history of Brisbane’s oldest residence to create a short story. Samantha and the team from Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre worked closely with our young writers to develop their story line and edit it in readiness for publishing. The book launch was celebrated on Tuesday afternoon at Gumdale State School.

PBL Up-date
This week we will be conducting our first Dougie Rewards celebration for Term 4, and our students are all well on their way to be attending the exciting event. There is much excitement as they work hard to earn their last few Dougie stamps to be able to participate – ask your child on at the end of the week what reward they received for being safe, respectful and responsible!
This term, our Wondall Learners have been working on being RESPECTFUL by using kind and polite words. They have been encouraged to think before speaking and to assess the impact their words may have on others. Our Dougie Dollars have been flying out of the bags as students have been doing a fantastic job of being kind and polite to both staff and each other.
Our upcoming focus for this fortnight will be Wondall Learners RESPECT others’ learning. The purpose of this focus is to encourage our students to make positive choices for themselves and to manage their own behaviour in the classroom. Students will be taught to identify signs in themselves that they may be moving out of the Learning Zone or Green Zone and revise strategies to assist in self regulating their own behaviour, to enable them to return to a learning mindset.
Our Dougie totals so far this term are $2956. We are well on our way to making our $5000 Whole School Reward!
Our friends over at @triplepparenting have released their free Fear-Less Triple P Online program, designed to help children (and parents) manage anxious feelings and stop unnecessary worrying by providing a toolbox of strategies, skills, and knowledge. There is even a module dedicated to Parenting during COVID-19. You can register for free by visiting:
