PREP VISION SCREENING
Visit by Registered Nurse for Free Prep Vision Screening
Good vision is important for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Vision screening checks for common eye conditions that may impact your child’s ability to see and therefore impact their learning and development.
A Registered Nurse will be visiting the school on 20 October 2022 to commence vision screening for children in their prep year. If you wish to have your prep child participate in this free vision screening program, please contact the school to obtain a consent form. Parents do not need to be present for screening, however if you would like to be, please contact the school to arrange this.
If your child’s vision is screened, you will be advised of the results in writing. If a vision concern is found, you will receive a phone call from the nurse to discuss referral to an eye health professional for further assessment. If a vision concern is identified and your child requires glasses, eligible health care card holders may be assisted with free basic glasses through the Spectacle Supply Scheme.
Participation in vision screening is not compulsory. If you do not wish for your child to participate in screening, please complete the consent form and indicate that you wish to decline screening.
If you have any questions, please contact the Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program on 1800 687 372.

PREP TRANSITION EVENTS
Prep transition events are important in setting your child up for success and are designed to introduce your child to the Prep environment to reduce anxiety in starting school. We recommend enrolling early and attending as many sessions as you can. The Prep transition sessions we are offering this year include:
Enrolment Sessions – via invite only - booking system for enrolled families only (paperwork needs to have been submitted and finalised through the school office).
Approximately 15 children attend these sessions at a time. The Enrolment Sessions are designed to create a sense of community for our enrolling children and families to meet and establish connections in preparation for 2023. Parents/carers will be provided with specific information on helping their children to become ready for Prep, whilst our staff get to know your children.
Orientation Sessions – via invite only - booking system for enrolled families only.
Children are offered two sessions to attend to meet our current Prep teachers and students in order to help them transition and become comfortable with starting Prep in 2023. Parents/carers will be provided with information around Prep-readiness and Early Literacy and Numeracy development whilst their children are enjoying time in the classrooms. In the final week of school, children will be invited to an additional session to meet their 2023 teacher and visit their new classroom.
Please share our Wondall Heights SS 2023 Prep Brochure with family, friends and neighbours who have Prep aged children (born 1 July 2017 - 30 June 2018) who are interested in attending Wondall Heights SS next year!
Positive Behaviour for Learning
PBL Focus Term 3 Weeks 7 and 8 - Respectful
Our PBL focus for week 7 and 8 is revisiting, ‘Wondall Learners RESPECT others’ learning’. The objective of this focus is to teach the importance of respecting the right of others to learn in the classroom, as well as to gain an understanding of how to manage one’s self in order to allow maximum learning for all within the classroom context.
Students participated in whole class discussions, brainstorms and mind mapping activities.
Discussion points included:
- What is the teacher’s job? (prepare and deliver lessons, teach…)
- What is a student’s job? (participate, learn, allow others to learn…)
- WHY it is important to respect others right to learn within our classrooms?
- What might our bodies look like and feel like when we are respecting the learning of others?
- When our bodies are not in the green zone what strategies can we use to avoid unintentionally interrupting the learning for others?
Students created a poster displaying the ways in which they can respect the learning of others, such as keeping hands and feet to self, listening carefully to others, taking turns, using polite and kind words, putting hands up before speaking, encouraging others, allowing the teacher to teach, helping classmates, being a role-model, following teacher instructions. Posters are being displayed in the classroom and will be referred to during the fortnight.
When students display expected behaviours, they receive DOUBLE DOUGIES as an incentive.
Interschool Sport Semester 2
This Friday is our last training before our Interschool Sport OZTAG Day, Thursday September 1 at Kitchener Park. Students will need to arrive at school for normal class start time, to have rolls marked before proceeding to buses for transport to the venue. Students can wear their sports uniform, which includes normal sports shoes, socks, sports shorts, shirt and school hat. If students have Oztag shorts, they can change into these at the venue. Students will also require a water bottle and packed lunch for the day.
- Put Road Safety first every day
- Follow school zone speed limits
- Obey parking signage, especially in drop off and pick up zones
- Never double park
- Obey the directions of school crossing supervisors at all times.
Active School Travel
Year 6 Bike Skills Training
We want more students to cycle to school and we want them to have the skills, confidence and experience to ride safely.
To prepare our students to ride, as part of the Active School Travel program, Brisbane City Council is offering Year 6 students a FREE 60-minute bike skills training program with a professional cycling coach.
Bike skills training provides children with invaluable riding skills and lays the foundation for independent travel choices and fun family rides. The session will be held at school, in school time on Friday 16 September and students need to bring their own bike and helmet.
Students will learn all the essentials including:
- Safety check, including helmet, tyres, bell and brakes
- Bike control, environment scanning, signalling and riding manoeuvres
- Safely crossing intersections and the road (footpath to footpath)
- Queensland road rules and footpath etiquette
To participate, students should already know how to ride a bike. This is not a learn to ride program, but rather a comprehensive bike skills session focusing on safety. Information has been emailed to Year 6 families and permissions need to be returned by Wednesday 7 September.
Bike skills training is fully funded by Brisbane City Council’s Active School Travel Program and places are limited. Be quick to secure your place!
Join us on Fridays and actively travel to school. Your body and brain will love it!
The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) for 2022 has now commenced. Your child should have received a recording sheet from their classroom teacher. All students who complete the challenge will receive a certificate signed by the Queensland Premier.
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, between 9 May to 26 August.
For a student to successfully complete the Premier's Reading Challenge they are required to read or experience the number of books indicated below:
- Prep to Year 2—read or experience 20 books.
- Years 3 to 4—read 20 books.
- Years 5 to 9—read 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2022 challenge is to engage more students to read than ever before! Last year saw more than 168,000 children from around the state participate.
Completed record sheets with student’s full name and class on them need to be dropped into the Office by Friday 26 August.
