R U OK? Day
R U OK? Day is Thursday 8 September 2022. It’s our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling.
At Wondall, we will be recognising R U OK? Day on Friday 9 September with a yellow themed Park'n'Stride.
Students and staff are invited to wear yellow socks, shirts or hair accessories on this day.
LEGO DONATIONS
Thank you to the generous families (and children) who have already provided some Lego donations. We warmly welcome further donations to support with the establishment of a Lego Club for students. All donations are gratefully accepted.

Please enrol now at the school office so you don’t miss out on our Prep Transition events starting in early September (by email invite only)!
Dates for Wondall Heights State School’s 2023 Prep Transition Program are as, below.
PREP TRANSITION EVENTS
Prep transition events are important in setting your child up for success and are designed to introduce your child to the Prep environment to reduce anxiety in starting school. We recommend enrolling early and attending as many sessions as you can. The Prep transition sessions we are offering this year include:
Enrolment Sessions – via invite only - booking system for enrolled families only (paperwork needs to have been submitted and finalised through the school office).
Approximately 15 children attend these sessions at a time. The Enrolment Sessions are designed to create a sense of community for our enrolling children and families to meet and establish connections in preparation for 2023. Parents/carers will be provided with specific information on helping their children to become ready for Prep, whilst our staff get to know your children.
Orientation Sessions – via invite only - booking system for enrolled families only.
Children are offered two sessions to attend to meet our current Prep teachers and students in order to help them transition and become comfortable with starting Prep in 2023. Parents/carers will be provided with information around Prep-readiness and Early Literacy and Numeracy development whilst their children are enjoying time in the classrooms. In the final week of school, children will be invited to an additional session to meet their 2023 teacher and visit their new classroom.
Please share our Wondall Heights SS 2023 Prep Brochure with family, friends and neighbours who have Prep aged children (born 1 July 2017 - 30 June 2018) who are interested in attending Wondall Heights SS next year!

Classes will have the opportunity to visit Book Fair on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday this week. During the class visit, students can enter our Scavenger Hunt competition for the chance to win a $10 voucher to spend at Book Fair, and to complete their Wish List.
Books can be purchased at Book Fair, or Online. If purchasing online, please note that Book Fair is not the same payment portal as Book Club. Online payments can be made at: https://www.scholastic.com.au/payment
Please ensure that you record the 8-digit receipt number and details of the cardholder making payment on the back of the Wish List form. Students then bring the form back to Book Fair to receive their books.
Popular titles quite often sell out at Book Fair. In this case, titles will be ordered from Scholastic and delivered to the school. Scholastic will endeavour to have all orders back to school by the school holidays, but this can not be guaranteed due to the closeness to the end of term.
Interschool Sport Basketball Semester 2
This Friday, Years 4-6 students will start team-based games and drills of BASKETBALL in the afternoons leading up to our BASKETBALL Interschool Sport Day in Week 3, Thursday October 20. Friday afternoons will be internal on our own school courts for all Year 4 and occasionally we will use Heers Park just beyond our boundary if available. Some Year 5 and 6 groups after eating their lunch from 1.15pm walk to, use and walk from Brisbane Bayside College supervised by Wondall Heights State School staff.
Students will be back at Wondall for the 3pm bell. There is no capacity to pick up students from Brisbane Bayside College. If you have a student that needs to be collected prior to 3pm, it will need to be arranged the day prior so that the student remains with teams on-site at Wondall. Students walking each week will be verbally informed by Thursday if it is their group. Here are the groups as they currently stand (staffing/weather pending):
- This Friday, September 9 groups are Miss Foster, Mr Haworth and Mrs Uhlmann’s teams.
- Next Friday, September 16 groups are Mrs Smith, Mrs Coates, Mrs Barber and Mr Bloxsom’s teams.
- Term 4 Friday October 7 groups are Miss Foster, Mr Haworth and Mrs Uhlmann’s teams.
- Term 4 Friday October 14 groups are Mrs Smith, Mrs Coates, Mrs Barber and Mr Bloxsom’s teams.
Interschool Sport OZTAG wrap
Last Thursday, Years 4-6 competed at the Interschool Sport OZTAG day against Manly West and Lota.

Well done to all on a great day of OZTAG and hopefully our Basketball day will be just as great.
South-East QLD Primary Football Championships 2022
Our Y5 girls competed recently at the Championships. They played out some hard-fought losses with one of the teams played against being the eventual undefeated winner of the competition. Well done representing Wondall proudly girls and never giving up during some tough matches.
Metropolitan East Athletics
Recently, Aiden L, Kody L and Daniel M competed for Bayside District across multiple events at QSAC at the Metropolitan East Athletics Carnival. Daniel and Kody competed strongly in 800m and High Jump. Aiden finished 2nd in both 1500m (in a record time) and 800m and has now qualified for the Metropolitan East team to compete at the QLD Athletics Carnival. Well done boys and all the best to Aiden for his next challenge.

Active School Travel
Year 6 Bike Skills Training
We want more students to cycle to school and we want them to have the skills, confidence and experience to ride safely.
To prepare our students to ride, as part of the Active School Travel program, Brisbane City Council is offering Year 6 students a FREE 60-minute bike skills training program with a professional cycling coach.
Bike skills training provides children with invaluable riding skills and lays the foundation for independent travel choices and fun family rides. The session will be held at school, in school time on Friday 16 September and students need to bring their own bike and helmet.
Students will learn all the essentials including:
- Safety check, including helmet, tyres, bell and brakes
- Bike control, environment scanning, signalling and riding manoeuvres
- Safely crossing intersections and the road (footpath to footpath)
- Queensland road rules and footpath etiquette
To participate, students should already know how to ride a bike. This is not a learn to ride program, but rather a comprehensive bike skills session focusing on safety. Information has been emailed to Year 6 families and permissions need to be returned by Wednesday 7 September.
Bike skills training is fully funded by Brisbane City Council’s Active School Travel Program and places are limited. Be quick to secure your place!
Attention: Prep-Year 2 Families
Riding’s more fun on two wheels!
As part of Wondall Heights SS participation in the Active School Travel (AST) program, Brisbane City Council is offering free learn to ride workshops exclusive to students at our school!
Sessions will be held on Wednesday 28th September at Cox Park and are available to Prep – Year 2 students to help them transition from training wheels to two wheels. Young riders who are already off training wheels are welcome too. A parent/carer must be present and assist their child during the session.
Register via Eventbrite – two sessions are available:
Please note this is offered by Brisbane City Council – no school staff will be present. Places are limited, so get in quick!
Also, don’t forget to join us on Fridays and actively travel to school. Your body and brain will love it!
