Thank You
On behalf of our entire school staff I want to thank all of our students, families, P&C and community members for your support of Wondall Heights State School in 2023. It has been a tremendous year of learning and celebrations in the school, with many great things achieved for our students.
We have made significant improvements in 2023 on a number of key things and share updates on these:
- Student Academic Achievement: In Semester 1, 92% of students achieved an A-C in English which is similarly reflected in all other learning areas.
- Positive School Opinion Results: 100% of staff say they enjoy working at Wondall - 95.5% of students, 97.9% of parents and 100% of staff say that students are expected to do their best.
- Increased School Attendance- positively all of our students are working at being ACE students- Attending, Confident and Engaged
- A great school review- setting us up for the next four years of learning.
- Synthetic Phonics Implementation- over the year we have had all current classroom and inclusion teachers across Prep-Year 6 trained in Sounds Write, a synthetic phonics program. This has seen immediate positive results in student learning. Watch this space for information sessions for parents in 2024.
- IT enhancements- all classrooms with interactive TVs, increased digital devices for student use.
- Grounds- continual upgrades have occurred with painting and refurbishments in rooms and the physical grounds. Over the January holidays we will have additional roofing installed over the prep playground and painting of several blocks.
Year 6 Graduation
On Wednesday 6 December we will hold our Year 6 graduation for students and their nominated guests commencing at 9am. Following their graduation, students will head off for their end of year celebration at Bounce. We wish our graduating class well and know they will continue to ‘Strive to Excel’ in the future.
Report Cards
Student report cards will be emailed home on Wednesday 6 December. Please ensure your email address is current in the front office to receive this. admin@wondallheightsss.eq.edu.au
End of Year Celebrations
To mark the end of the school year, classes will hold their own ‘break up day’ events on Wednesday 6 December. For this, we ask that parents arrange food suitable for your own child/ren to consume. It will not be shared food.
- Parents are to pack their own ‘party box’ from home for your child to eat throughout the day- parents have control of what their child eats.
- Tuckshop will have meal deals available on the day.
- Please note that the Tuckshop will be closed from Thursday 7 December, so parents will need to pack food for your child on the last 2 days of school.
Wednesday 6 December is Free Dress- students are to wear sun safe clothing and must have a broad brim hat with closed in shoes.
Thursday/Friday students are to wear either formal or sports uniform. On these days, students will participate in end of year activities and support with clean up/moving of rooms in preparation for 2024.
At this time of the year, students like to share the Christmas cheer with their friends and they are welcome to engage in this, but we ask that only cards are given out. Please do not send lollies or confectionery eg- candy canes. We have students with a range of different food/dietary allergies and requirements and the school will not be responsible for oversight of these confectionery items.
Gifts- whilst families may like to give an end of year present as a generous thanks to staff, we do have departmental policies around these and staff cannot accept gifts in excess of $150 or any cash/lottery items.
Class Arrangements in 2024
With an anticipated enrolment of 600 students next year, we will have 25 classes. These will include both ‘straight’ and ‘multi-age’ classes. Attached is an information letter providing general information about how multi-age classes will operate.
Each year we spend considerable time planning our school classroom structure based on student numbers in year levels, departmental staffing allocations, students’ social, emotional, behaviour and academic needs. All classes, whether a single year level or multi-age class group, have students with diverse learning needs and abilities. When planning for student learning, teachers take into consideration the strengths, prior knowledge and needs of every student. They use this as a starting point to design the learning and work from where each student is currently at. In any class, there will be teaching and learning that occurs as a whole class, in small groups and at an individual level.
In consideration of 2024 all students were provided the opportunity to list some of their friends who they feel that they work well with and these have been reviewed by staff, aligned to information from teachers/parents when making the classes.
We would like to re-iterate that the placement of every child into a class for 2024 has been thoroughly considered, with input from their 2023 teachers, specialist teachers, school inclusion staff and leadership team. Further, we remind parents that we do not take requests for specific teachers and that placements into classes are managed by school staff.
Students will be introduced to their 2024 teachers during the ‘Step Up’ session on Wednesday 6 December. Following this event, they will bring home information sheets including details of their teacher, class location and some friends in their class. We are excited to welcome our 2024 preps who will also participate in this afternoon.
Medication
Remember to collect your child’s medication from the office before the holidays. All medication is to be collected by an adult. If your child will require medication in 2024 please check the expiry dates before bringing medications back to school and complete the required documentation for the medication to be administered.

School will finish on Friday 8 December- sports uniform or formal uniform to be worn. Tuckshop will not be open so please ensure your child has food for the day.
Book Drop Off 2024

Please continue to monitor your email and the school Facebook page particularly in the week prior to school returning, for any changes to school operating procedures in 2024.
Have a wonderful break with your family and loved ones. For our departing students, staff and families, thank you for being part of Wondall Heights State School and for our returning students, we look forward to seeing you in your new classes on Monday 22 January 2024.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Our focus for the next two weeks is, ’Wondall Learners are resilient when they adjust to change’. The objective is to teach our students the appropriate tools to cope with change effectively. We want them to be well-prepared for the exciting shifts that the new school year will bring. Throughout this fortnight, we will guide our students to recognise that experiencing a certain level of anxiety amid change is normal. Students will discuss and identify a variety of strategies to cope with these feelings and embrace change positively. Students will be actively encouraged to formulate and plan their own resilience strategies applicable in various situations, both within the school environment and beyond. Acknowledging that change is a part of life, we want our Wondall Learners to feel confident when confronting and navigating through these inevitable shifts.

For the commencement of 2024, I have asked students for the option to “re-use” their Japanese notebooks from this year. (If their books still have pages to fill…)
Alternatively, students could also begin 2024 with “new” Japanese book as well.
