Head of Curriculum

Reading at Wondall

Our fourth group of teachers are attending Sounds-Write professional development this week. The completion of this round will see all our Inclusion Teachers, including Mrs Moscoso our Head of Inclusion, trained in this methodology to support students learning to read across the school . We will also have teachers in Years 3, 5 and 6 beginning to implement the program in their classrooms.

Parents can support their children using their decoding skills to read at home. Sounds-Write has a free parent training webinar that can be accessed at

https://www.udemy.com/course/help-your-child-to-read-and-write/

This webinar is designed to show parents how they can support their children with decoding at home using similar techniques to those used in a Sounds-Write lesson.

This week we presented every teacher on staff with a copy of ‘The Art and Science of Teaching Primary Reading’ (Christopher Such, 2021). We will read and discuss this text as a professional learning team book study. This book study will support our teachers to develop a deeper understanding of the Science of Reading (SoR) linking evidence-based practices for the teaching of reading with neuroscience to understand how children best learn to read. We will use our learning to underpin our school’s Reading Framework as we transition to Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum and support every student in our school to learn to read successfully using evidence-based best practice.
