Wondall Heights State School is continuing with our preventative hygiene actions.  The preventative actions, as recommended by Queensland Health, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission are listed below:

  • practice social distancing and keep 1.5 metres apart
  • wash hands frequently
  • students and staff to stay at home if unwell
  • avoid large gatherings and crowded indoor spaces, and
  • practise good hygiene

Only Prep and Year 1 parents should be entering the school grounds, please practice social distancing when in the school grounds.

We appreciate your ongoing support.

We are currently in the community consultation phase to develop our school’s Student Code of Conduct.  Consultation forms an important part of the development and feedback process for the Student Code of Conduct.

Each fortnight in the newsletter, a section of the Student Code of Conduct will be included to provide information to parents on mandated sections of the Code.

Parents will have an opportunity to provide feedback and insights into the development of the Student Code of Conduct through the following forums:

  • Whole school survey monkey to all families
  • Phone interviews - random selection of parents from each class
  • Focus Group Discussion
  • P and C consultation
  • School Council consultation

Students will have an opportunity to provide feedback and insights into the Student Code of Conduct through the following forums:

  • Student body representation group
  • School Council

Staff also provide feedback and insights through various forums and consultative groups.

City Meets Country Free Dress Day Thursday 13 August

Earlier in the year Mellyla L, 6C, wrote me a letter to propose a free dress day to raise funds to support our Chaplain.  On Thursday, students are invited to dress as a farmer and bring a gold coin donation.

Congratulations to Mellyla for organising the event, you’ve done a great job!

Learning in 2C

In Science this term, 2C have been learning about the many natural resources the Earth provides, and how we use and manage these with respect. We were fortunate to be able to support our learning with a painting by Colleen Sam (mother of Ebony and Rianna) that represents these elements.  We thank Colleen for providing us with a model to aid in our thinking and learning this week.

Colleen shared the following meaning of each element: Flora, Celestial Realm, Sky (weather), Fauna, Water, Spiritual Realm, Fire and Smoke, Wind (air), Land (Country), People.

With every element Aboriginal people are taught from a very young age that everything in natrure is sacred, has a spirit and has their own special purpose.

Some examples of how we learning about all these things: as aboriginal people we are connected to everything in our environment from when we are in the womb.  In my tribe the Kalkadoon People, the animals comes to the mother whilst she is pregnant, that’s how we get our Animal Totems.

Another example is understanding flora and how flowers help us find the best times which animals and bush foods are to be eaten.

Throughout our lives from the beginning we learn to personalise and connect to nature on a deeper, personal level then it becomes clearer to us that mankind is not above nature so we must respect it.

Today’s growth mindset quote of the day …

Try a thing you haven’t done three times. Once, to get over the fear of doing it. Twice, to learn how to do it. And a third time, to figure out whether you like it or not. Virgil Garnett Thomson

Have a great week.
