WONDALL MURALS
We have been excited to have our students and staff working alongside local Quandamooka artist Nix Gross, to create our own artworks recognising the connection between our school, community and culture. The artworks are now complete and on display in the Administration Foyer, Walkway and in the Hall. BULLYING. NO WAY!
The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence has a new name—Bullying No Way: National week of action.
Bullying No Way Week, 12 to 16 August 2024, is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative and connects schools and communities to find workable solutions to prevent bullying.
The week gives schools and supporters flexibility to plan activities that suit their schedule—whether it's spreading awareness throughout the week or focusing on an impactful day or two.
The theme for 2024 is 'Everyone belongs'.
When we all feel like we belong, bullying struggles to find a place. It's about embracing who we are, respecting everyone's differences and standing up together against unkindness.
Belonging means we all have a role in preventing bullying. We're encouraged to speak up and create a safe place where everyone feels supported and respected, and our voices are heard and valued.
What is Bullying?
The agreed national definition for Australian schools describes bullying as
- ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm;
- involving an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening;
- happening in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).
- bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records);
- having immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.
Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include:
- mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance)
- not liking someone or a single act of social rejection
- one-off acts of meanness or spite; and
- isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.
However, these conflicts still need to be addressed and resolved. At Wondall Heights State School our staff will work to quickly respond to any matters raised of this nature in collaboration with students and parents.
Please see page 33 of our Student Code of Conduct, which can be found on our website, for more information on how Wondall Heights State School prevents and responds to bullying.

DEBATING CLUB WITH MR PALMER
Our new W.H.S.S. debate club got off to an incredible start last week. Two teams of three presented persuasive oral arguments for or against the motion: “Cats make the best pets”. Students presented a range of interesting points with confidence. They employed persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions, emotional language, facts and ‘call to action’ statements to enhance their delivery. Great work, team!
