City Meets Country Free Dress Day Thursday 13 August
Earlier in the year Mellyla L, 6C, wrote me a letter to propose a free dress day to raise funds to support our Chaplain. On Thursday, students are invited to dress as a farmer and bring a gold coin donation.
Congratulations to Mellyla for organising the event, you’ve done a great job!

Learning in 2C
In Science this term, 2C have been learning about the many natural resources the Earth provides, and how we use and manage these with respect. We were fortunate to be able to support our learning with a painting by Colleen Sam (mother of Ebony and Rianna) that represents these elements. We thank Colleen for providing us with a model to aid in our thinking and learning this week.
Colleen shared the following meaning of each element: Flora, Celestial Realm, Sky (weather), Fauna, Water, Spiritual Realm, Fire and Smoke, Wind (air), Land (Country), People.
With every element Aboriginal people are taught from a very young age that everything in natrure is sacred, has a spirit and has their own special purpose.
Some examples of how we learning about all these things: as aboriginal people we are connected to everything in our environment from when we are in the womb. In my tribe the Kalkadoon People, the animals comes to the mother whilst she is pregnant, that’s how we get our Animal Totems.
Another example is understanding flora and how flowers help us find the best times which animals and bush foods are to be eaten.
Throughout our lives from the beginning we learn to personalise and connect to nature on a deeper, personal level then it becomes clearer to us that mankind is not above nature so we must respect it.
Today’s growth mindset quote of the day …
Try a thing you haven’t done three times. Once, to get over the fear of doing it. Twice, to learn how to do it. And a third time, to figure out whether you like it or not. Virgil Garnett Thomson
Have a great week.

JUMPERS, JACKETS and HATS
Just a friendly reminder to ensure all hats, jumpers and jackets are clearly labelled with your child’s name. As the weather heats up, students may take off items off jackets and jumpers in the middle of the day and from time to time, one child will accidentally take home another child’s item of clothing. Please encourage your child to put their clothing items safely in their bags, once they take them off. In the event an item of clothing goes home with the wrong child, could you please return the item to the office the next day to be returned to the correct child.
PHOTO DAYS
Please be advised that photo days are 25th and 26th August. All children should have been sent home photo envelopes. On your child’s photo day, please ensure your child is dressed in their formal uniform, regardless of whether it is their allocated PE day.
Sibling photos will be held before school from 8am in the hall.
BOOK WEEK
In week 7, we will be celebrating Book Week. In preparation, we would like to invite students to send in a photo of themselves, reading their favourite book in a weird and wonderful place. During Book Week, we will post the photos to Facebook to share our community’s love of reading! If you would like your photo shared, please send to sabbo6@eq.edu.au .
I look forward to seeing how creative our community can be!
PREP INFORMATION SESSIONS
We are currently taking Prep 2021 enrolments – please come to the school office to enrol your child ASAP, if you haven’t already done so. We are also currently offering positions to out-of-catchment enrolments on our waiting list.
Our next event will be Prep Interviews for those children enrolled for Prep 2021 at Wondall Heights State School. This year’s interview process has changed from previous years. There will now be a group interview where parents will be presented information and asked to fill in questionnaires whilst their children interact with our teachers, in a group setting. The new format is designed to create a sense of community and for children and families to meet and establish connections in preparation for 2021. This format will also allow our staff to spend more time getting to know your children and to observe their interactions with other children. More information about this process will be provided to families as we send out invites to this event in the next few weeks. To ensure you receive your invite, please enrol at the office ASAP.
From Pam Kondys Deputy Principal 3-6
Each fortnight I have been providing sections of the Student Code of Conduct for your perusal. There are several segments of the Student Code of Conduct that are mandatory. Last week, I shared the section on Restrictive Practices. This week, I will be sharing with you, Temporary Removal of Student Property.
The removal of property in a student’s possession may be necessary to promote the caring, safe and supportive learning environment of the school, and to maintain and foster mutual respect between all state school staff, students and visitors.
Temporary Removal of Student Property
The removal of any property in a student’s possession may be necessary to promote the caring, safe and supportive learning environment of the school, to maintain and foster mutual respect between all state school staff and students. The Temporary removal of student property by school staff procedure outlines the processes, conditions and responsibilities for state school principals and school staff when temporarily removing student property.
In determining what constitutes a reasonable time to retain student property, the principal or state school staff will consider:
- the condition, nature or value of the property
- the circumstances in which the property was removed
- the safety of the student from whom the property was removed, other students or staff members
- good management, administration and control of the school.
The Principal or state school staff determine when the temporarily removed student property can be returned, unless the property has been handed to the Queensland Police Service.
The following items are explicitly prohibited at Wondall Heights State School and will be removed if found in a student’s possession:
- illegal items or weapons (e.g. guns, knives*, throwing stars, brass knuckles, chains)
- imitation guns or weapons
- potentially dangerous items (e.g. blades, rope)
- drugs** (including tobacco)
- alcohol
- aerosol deodorants or cans (including spray paint)
- explosives (e.g. fireworks, flares, sparklers)
- flammable solids or liquids (e.g. fire starters, mothballs, lighters)
- poisons (e.g. weed killer, insecticides)
- inappropriate or offensive material (e.g. racist literature, pornography, extremist propaganda).
* No knives of any type are allowed at school, including flick knives, ballistic knives, sheath knives, push daggers, trench knives, butterfly knives, star knives, butter knives, fruit knives or craft knives, or any item that can be used as a weapon, for example a chisel. Knives needed for school activities will be provided by the school, and the use of them will be supervised by school staff. In circumstances where students are required to have their own knives or sharp tools for particular subjects or vocational courses, the school will provide information about the procedures for carrying and storing these items at school.
** The administration of medications to students by school staff is only considered when a prescribing health practitioner has determined that it is necessary or when there is no other alternative in relation to the treatment of a specific health need. Schools require medical authorisation to administer any medication to students (including over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol or alternative medicines).
