Teaching and Learning
School Improvement Agenda for 2020 will focus on:
- Australian Curriculum and Moderation processes
- Effective pedagogy to engage students
- Creative and Critical Thinking
Each year level will have a moderation session with the Leadership Team during week 9 or 10. Our moderation process aligns curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting. Each year level moderation provides consistency of delivery of the curriculum and assessment and A-E achievement.
Moderation is also an opportunity for Teachers and the Leadership to celebrate the success of student learning and to reflect on our teaching practices.
All Teachers will attend a Twilight session on Wednesday; the focus will be on Term 4 curriculum, planning and assessment.
Student safety is our number one priority at Wondall Heights SS. Some parents have raised concerns for the safety of students in the drop off/pick up zone.
Please keep in mind that children should be entering on the left hand side of the car. School bags should be put in the cabin of the car; it’s dangerous for children to walk behind the car to put bags in the boot.
Drop off / pick up zone please note the following guidelines when using the zone:
- The drop off zone is strictly no parking.
- Parents dropping their children off in the morning are asked to drop their children at the drop off zone and move on.
If you wish to use the pickup zone in the afternoon, we ask you do the following:
- Stay in your car.
- Teach your child/ren how to do up their seat belts.
- Move baby capsules to the right hand side of the car so we can enter children safely in the left hand side. Children are not to walk out onto the road to enter the car on the right hand side.
- Have your child’s name on paper on your sun visor to assist us to call children.
- We will put school bags on the right hand side front seat, please have the window open. Do not get out of the car to put bags in the boot.
P and C - Father’s Day Stall
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who manned the Fathers’ Day Stall to help children pick out the perfect gift for their fathers.
A very special thank you to Sarah Wilson for organising the stall, you did a great job!
I hope all of our fathers and grandfathers had a wonderful day on Sunday.

PREP INFORMATION SESSIONS
We are currently taking Prep 2021 enrolments – please come to the school office to enrol your child ASAP, if you haven’t already done so.
PREP INTERVIEW SESSIONS
On Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 September, we held our first group interview sessions. Whilst the parents had a chance to meet each other and the school Leadership Team, our pre-preppies had a chance to meet our Wondall staff and have some fun with each other doing some activities. These sessions are designed to transition students from their kindergarten/ pre-prep settings into formal schooling, as well as continue to celebrate our wonderful Wondall community. Our 2021 Prep students left the sessions with a special book to welcome them to the Wondall community as well as some special number, letter and name cards to start them off on their schooling journey. We hope everyone who attended found the sessions informative and useful.
PREP ORIENTATION SESSIONS
The next event will be our Prep Orientation sessions held 23-27 November. In these sessions, our future 2021 Prep students will join a prep classroom one morning to experience what it feels like to be in Prep. Parents will join the leadership team once more to learn tips and tricks for getting children ready for Prep, as well as have a chance to purchase uniforms etc. We will send out invites to families who have enrolled in early November.

Student Code of Conduct
A positive school environment, where all students are included and feel safe and supported improves student learning outcomes. Every member of the school community has a role to play in creating a safe, supportive and disciplined school environment, where students can learn and achieve. At Wondall Heights State School the wellbeing of our students is an essential element in contributing to students feel safe and supported.
Below you will find the section on Student Wellbeing from the Student Code of Conduct. If you have any questions or feedback in relation to this section please feel free to contact me, pkond4@eq.edu.au .
Student Wellbeing
Wondall Heights State School offers a range of programs and services to support the wellbeing of students in our school. We encourage parents and students to speak with their class teacher or make an appointment to meet with the deputy principal if they would like individual advice about accessing particular services.
Learning and wellbeing are inextricably linked — students learn best when their wellbeing is optimised, and they develop a strong sense of wellbeing when they experience success in learning. The student learning and wellbeing framework supports state schools with creating positive school cultures and embedding student wellbeing in all aspects of school life through connecting the learning environment, curriculum and pedagogy, policies, procedures and partnerships for learning and life.
Curriculum and pedagogy
Schools build the foundations for wellbeing and lifelong learning through curriculum embedding personal and social capabilities (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and social management) in the implementation of the P–12 curriculum, assessment and reporting framework.
Schools acknowledge the positive impact that a meaningful relationship between teacher and students can have on students' academic and social outcomes. As part of the whole school's curriculum at Wondall Heights State School, we provide age-appropriate drug and alcohol education that reinforces public health and safety messages.
Policy and expectations
Within a school community there are specific health and wellbeing issues that will need to be addressed for the whole school, specific students, or in certain circumstances.
Drug education and intervention
Wondall Heights State School implements drug intervention measures for students involved in drug-related incidents at school, during school activities or while in school uniform. This is managed to protect the health and safety of the student/s involved, other students, school staff and the wider community.
Specialised health needs
Wondall Heights State School works closely with parents to ensure students with specialised health needs, including those requiring specialised health procedures, have access to a reasonable standard of support for their health needs whilst attending school or school-based activities.
This means that appropriate health plans are developed and followed for students with specialised health needs, that staff are aware of the student's medical condition and that an appropriate number of staff have been trained to support the student's health condition.
Medications
Wondall Heights State School requires parent consent and medical authorisation to administer any medication (including over-the-counter medications) to students. For students requiring medication to be administered during school hours, the school can provide further information and relevant forms.
For students with a long-term health condition requiring medication, parents need to provide the school with a Request to administer medication at school form signed by the prescribing health practitioner.
Wondall Heights State School maintains a minimum of one adrenaline auto-injector and asthma reliever/puffer, stored in the school's/campus first aid kit to provide emergency first aid medication if required.
Mental health
Wondall Heights State School implements early intervention measures and treatments for students where there is reasonable belief that a student has a mental health difficulty. This includes facilitating the development, implementation and periodic review of a Student Plan.
Suicide prevention
Wondall Heights State School staff who notice suicide warning signs in a student should seek help immediately from the school guidance officer, senior guidance officer or other appropriate staff.
When dealing with a mental health crisis, schools call 000 when there is an imminent threat to the safety of the student in the first instance, and where necessary provide first aid. In all other situations, Wondall Heights State School staff follow suicide intervention and prevention advice by ensuring:
- the student is not left alone
- their safety and the safety of other students and staff is maintained
- students receive appropriate support immediately
- parents are advised
- all actions are documented and reported.
Suicide postvention
In the case of a suicide of a student that has not occurred on school grounds, Wondall Heights State School enacts a postvention response, by communicating with the family of the student and ensuring immediate support is provided to students and staff who may be affected.
Where a suicide has occurred on school grounds or at a school event, Wondall Heights State School staff immediately enact the School Emergency Management Plan and communicate with the family of the student and ensure immediate support is provided to students and staff who may be affected.
Your continued support with the development of the Student Code of Conduct is greatly appreciated.
