CyberSafety
Last week our students in Years 5 and 6 participated in cybersafety talks. The focus of these sessions delivered by Cybersafety and Reputation Branch of the Department of Education was about the use of social media and appropriate behaviours when online.
It is important for all of us to consider protective behaviours online and particularly, what we put on the internet can become a permanent record. Parents are encouraged to set firm guidelines around their child’s use of the internet. For additional information on cybersafety we suggest visiting the eSafety website - https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents .
The following pictorial is a good one for all of us to think about when we are interacting online.
Parents are encouraged to monitor their children are accessing online. Some of the games have built in chat functions and many of the main social media pages- Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok have age restrictions (generally 13 years old).
P&C Meeting
Thank you to the parents and community members who attended the P&C meeting last night. It was great to hear from our parent body and the suggestions to helping our school continue to improve.

2021 Booklists
The 2021 Booklist for Wondall Heights State School has been emailed to Parents/Carers. We have generated the booklists through a local company, S.O.S - School & Office Supplies, who can provide a pick-up/delivery option, should you wish to order before 6 November 2020. You may also wish to take the list to another stationery provider. A copy of the booklists will also be made available on the school’s website. The items on the list are the requirements for the 2021 classes. Some items may be able to be reused from previous years (eg. headphones / whiteboards), depending on the end of year condition. Teachers will endeavour to send any guaranteed surplus items home in the next few weeks, also for possible use next year.
All items on the list need to be clearly named and sent to school on the first day of 2021.
PREP TRANSISITON VIDEO
In light of COVID-19, we have had restrictions placed on who enters the school grounds, in order to keep our students and school community safe. As we have not been able to provide tours to our future prep families, we have made a Prep Transition Video to showcase what a day in the life of a prep student looks like. Thank you to Mr Palmer for his wonderful work on this and thank you to our featured prep students… very cute!!
Please visit our website to view the link.

PREP ORIENTATION SESSIONS
The next event will be our Prep Orientation sessions held 23-27 November. In these sessions, our future 2021 Prep students will join a prep classroom one morning to experience what it feels like to be in Prep. Parents will join the leadership team once more to learn tips and tricks for getting children ready for Prep, as well as have a chance to purchase uniforms etc. We will send out invites to families who have enrolled in early November.
School Resumes in 2021
For audit purposes, it is vital we have correct enrolment numbers at the commencement of the 2021 school year. If you will be returning later than the school start date (eg- away on holiday), please contact the office to complete a Day 8 returning form.
2021 Classes and Teachers
The Leadership Team, support staff and class teachers will work together to place students in a class for next year. Staff have deep knowledge of students, their needs and supports with class placements.
Please note we will not take requests for particular teachers. A new class and a new teacher is an opportunity for children to make new friends and to have new learning experiences.

Year 4, 5 and 6 Class Dance Videos
The class dance videos have been finalised and are available to view. It was previously stated that the videos would be available via the school YouTube channel. This is no longer available for us to use. Instead, a copy of your child’s dance video will be shared privately with you.

Year 6 – the video will be placed on the Year 6 Graduation USB at the end of the year.
USB
Please bring in a blank USB with your child’s name and class clearly labelled on it. The USB needs to have at least 1GB of space to hold the video. Students can use the USB from their school booklist or you can send in a separate one.
Where to hand it in
The USB’s will be collected by your child’s class teacher. Hand your USB in by Friday 30th October. USB’s will be returned as soon as the video has been loaded.
Thanks

Mental Health Week 2020 October 10 -17 has just been celebrated.
What is Queensland Mental Health Week?
Queensland Mental Health Week (QMHW) is an annual event that aims to improve community awareness and interest in mental health and wellbeing across the state. The event is linked to National Mental Health Week and World Mental Health Day, held annually on 10 October. Because of COVID-19, we are facing extra challenges this year, but it’s also a more critical time than ever to value our mental health.
TAKE TIME – FOR MENTAL HEALTH THROUGHOUT THE YEAR !
This year’s theme is Take time — for mental health
Take time is about taking a moment to do some of the simple things anyone can do to boost their mental wellbeing.
Take time is also about breaking down the stigma associated with mental illness and reaching out to people in our communities who need support.
Let’s take time for mental health together — at home, at school, at work, and at play.
Why get involved?
Mental health is important to every single one of us, yet it is a part of life we often overlook. Busy lives get in the way of us caring for our mental health, as does a fear of feeling vulnerable if we share our mental health challenges.
Queensland Mental Health Week is an opportunity to bring communities together, reach out to those who need support, and shine a spotlight on the things we can all do to support mental health.
This year’s theme, Take Time for Mental Health encourages people to take time for their mental health with steps simple actions that have been proven to improve wellbeing. They are:
- Get healthy – it is good for your mind as well as your body
- Keep learning – learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun
- Show kindness – Practicing small acts of kindness, giving back or showing gratitude can help you feel more satisfied with life
- Connect more – spending time with other people is important to everyone’s mental wellbeing
- Take notice – stay in the moment and remember the simple things that give you joy
- Embrace nature – step outside, connect with the natural world and nature, care of the planet.
Here are a few suggestions from the Queensland Government’s Dear Mind campaign:
- Do some colouring. Google 'mindful colouring' to find free printable colouring sheets. You're never too old to enjoy colouring in!
- Give yoga a go. Yoga focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost your physical and mental wellbeing. Find a free online video and try it for yourself.
- Disconnect from technology. Make time each day to disconnect from technology and observe the simple beauty of the world around you.
You may have noticed recently that Brisbane’s Story Bridge was lit up the colour Purple to remind each of us about the importance of Taking Time for our Mental Health. Take care.
Congratulations Jed!!!
Recently, Jed competed in the QLD BMX State Championships at Sleeman Supercross BMX track, Chandler. Jed raced two bike classes in his age group and won gold in both classes. Jed now a dual State Champion for 10-year-old boys.
