PBL- Reset and Reconnect for Term 3- Wondall Learners are Safe, Respectful and Responsible
Welcome to Term 3!
We are excited to commence another amazing term of learning here at Wondall. This term we look forward to building on our Semester 1 successes, as we continue to focus on our ACE (Attending, Confident and Engaged) students.
Please be advised of some temporary changes in our school leadership team, whilst Mr Wright is on leave for Weeks 3 and 4.
School Review
Thank you to all who participated in our recent School Review.
The review was very positive for our school and will help shape the future direction of education at Wondall Heights.
We look forward to sharing the review findings and collaboratively developing our next 4 year strategic plan with our school body, in the coming months.
100 Days of Prep
Congratulations to our Prep students for completing their first 100 days of Prep! Our Preppies celebrated with a ‘Zero the Hero’ superheroes day and completed lots of activities involving the number 100! It is such a massive achievement and we are so proud of our youngest students!
During Week 1, our school acknowledged NAIDOC Week with classroom and lunch time events for students. The week was culminated with a special parade on Friday which included a Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony demonstration by Matt Burns and Dance presentation from Brisbane Bayside State College. It was great to have so many in our community join us for this special event.

Life Education
In the coming weeks, students in Years 4-6 will be participating in age specific Life Education learning modules. An information letter of concepts to be covered with students by the trained presenter has been sent home.
Students will be participating in the following modules:
- Year 4 - Talk About It – Body Safety
- Year 5 – Talk About It – Evolving Friendships and Welcome to Puberty
- Year 6 – Talk About It - Navigating Relationships, Thriving in Puberty, The Journey of Human Reproduction
The Year 4-6 Talk About It sessions will commence next week, information has been sent home to families this week. A Year 3 program will take place in September, with information coming home closer to the day.
Parents, please ensure that you read the respective content, contact the nominated contact if you have any questions about the information to be delivered and return the permission slip to your child’s teacher by Tuesday 25th July.
We would like to acknowledge and thank our P&C who sponsor the Life Education sessions (approximately $30 for every student) so all of our students can participate in these important information lessons.
Notice of Intention to Attend Wondall Heights State School in 2024
We are currently looking at Wondall Heights State School’s planning needs for the 2024 school year. Part of this planning is considering the number of students we will have enrolled in the school. If your child is of Prep age for the 2024 school year and you are considering enrolment at Wondall Heights State School, can you please let us know your intentions by contacting the school. This is not binding and the catchment area and enrolment requirements still apply. The enrolment process will begin in Term 3 and will be communicated shortly. Early forward planning will help to make 2024 as successful as possible, for all our students.
Enrolment Process
In catchment students can currently enrol at the office during office opening hours.
Out-of-catchment students can join the wait list, please contact the office.
A decision will be made for out-of-catchment enrolments in Term 3, you will be invited to attend the Prep Enrolment Sessions in September if you are successful in securing a place at Wondall Heights State School.
Prep Enrolment Sessions will consist of a group interview where parents will be presented information and asked to fill in questionnaires whilst their children interact with our teachers, in a group setting. From there, enrolled 2024 Prep children will be invited to multiple orientation days where they will meet our Prep staff, use our Prep spaces and begin to become familiar with each other. This Prep transition process is vital in preparing your child for a great start to school!
Please share this information with family and friends living in the catchment area!
Positive Behaviour for Learning
PBL Focus Week – Reset and Reconnect for Term 3
Wondall students are safe, respectful and responsible. This fortnight our whole school’s focus is to build positive relationships, re-teach expectations, revisit rules and routines and positively reinforce these using our ‘Dougie Reward System.’ Our students will be participating in a range of connection activities to help build positive relationships within their class, as well as with their peers.
Parents, please chat with your children about what ‘connection’ activities they have completed, what they can tell you about our 3 school rules and what does being an ACE student mean to them?

New Lunchtime Expectations:
Over the last two weeks of Term 2, our school trialled playing first and eating second during our lunch breaks. Feedback from staff and students was in support of this new change. Some other feedback was that students were not getting long enough to eat, so a slight change for 1st Break only is to have 5 minutes longer during eating time.
This is to help reduce students entering classes straight from play, often resulting in behaviours occurring. When students have the time to sit, eat and settle after play, we are hoping to see smoother transitions back into learning resulting in less behaviours during class time. The new bell times are as follows:
Teaching Reading at Wondall
It has been great to speak with and observe our Prep-Year 2 and inclusion teachers who trained in Sounds-Write last term. They have returned filled with verve for teaching decoding and encoding using the Sounds Write program.
Next week our third group of teachers will be attending the four-day training, with the first of our Years 3-6 teachers joining them. We are excited to see the positive impact of this professionnal learning on our students throughout the school.
Premier's Reading Challenge
Last term, your child would have received a recording sheet and consent form from their classroom teacher for The Premier's Reading Challenge. If these have been misplaced, you can download new forms by clicking on the link below.
2023 Reading Challenge Record Form
Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books they’ve read during the reading period, between 8 May and 25 August.
Every student who completes the challenge and returns their forms by Friday 25 August will receive a Certificate of Achievement, signed by the Premier.
To complete the challenge:
- Prep to Year 2 – must read or experience 20 books
- Year 3 and 4 – must read 20 books
- Year 5 and 6 – must read 15 books (less books than year 3 and 4 due to likelihood of being longer and more complex)

The QCOHS team would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the school, parents and students who participated in The Queensland Child Oral Health Study (QCOHS). Your contribution in the form of an oral examination and completion of a study questionnaire has been invaluable and will help us gain a better understanding of the oral health of children in Queensland. Your family’s involvement will make a substantial contribution that will continue to benefit Queensland and Australian children for many years.
