WELCOME TO TERM 2
Welcome to all of our returning and new students and their families. We hope that you had a relaxing break and are ready for the term ahead. This term we have many things occurring for our students including:
- Action packed curriculum learning
- Excursions and Interschool Sports
Importantly, we will continue to build our ACE (Attending, Confident, Engaged) students and we need your help with this, by ensuring that your child is at school unless they are sick or there is some other significant reason.
CROSS COUNTRY
It was fantastic weather last Wednesday for the conduct of our Cross Country. Congratulations to all of our students for their participation in the event and a special shout out to Mrs Butterworth on the smooth conduct of her first whole school carnival at Wondall! Official results will be shared at the assembly, next Monday.
ANZAC DAY MARCH
Today 24th April, staff and students participated in our school ANZAC Day service. We thank members from our local community who attended including representatives from Manly Lota RSL.
On ANZAC Day, Thursday 25th April, the Wondall Heights State School community has been invited to participate in the community march from Manly State School to Richard Russell Park.
Students are required to meet outside Manly State School, Earnest Street Manly at 7:45am for an 8am start. There will be a sign for Wondall, we are generally towards the back. Parents are welcome to march with their child. Wondall staff will also be in attendance. At the conclusion of the ceremony parents are to collect their child from a Wondall staff member.
Please ensure students are wearing their full school formal uniform and their school hat. Students are encouraged to bring a drink bottle.
FRIDAY SPORTS
Year 4-6 Interschool Sports commenced last Friday with students participating in soccer, touch football or netball. A reminder to parents, that students will not be released from the venue unless prior authorisation has been received via the office.
Please be aware with Friday sports, the STOP, DROP & GO facility will be SHUT to vehicles from 11:30am until all buses return at the end of the day (scheduled before 3pm).
We ask for your patience and seeking alternative parking to ensure the safety of our students.
SCHOOL PHOTOS
School photos will be in Week 6, Term 2 – 21 and 22 May. Envelopes will be sent home shortly and will need to be returned on your child’s photo day
APPROPRIATE PARKING
Parking in accordance with all road rules and signage is important to keep our children and other road users safe. Unfortunately, there has been an increase in the number of reports of illegal parking around the school to Brisbane City Council. As a result, our school has been added to Council’s School Zone Enforcement Program.
What does this mean?
Council’s Parking Compliance Officers will be actively patrolling the streets surrounding the school over the coming term to encourage safe parking behaviours. These patrols will be conducted in a Mobile Enforcement Vehicle or by an officer on foot. Please be kind – they have a job to do.
What are the common parking signs around schools?
A guide to common parking signs around school zones can be found here: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/traffic-and-transport/parking-in-brisbane/where-to-park/school-parking
PUBLIC HOLIDAYS
This term there are two public holidays, with the school shut on the following dates:
Thursday 25 April (ANZAC Day) & Monday 6 May (Labour Day)
AUSTRALIAN EARLY DEVELOPMENT CENSUS (AEDC) AUS
Building a national picture of child health
From May 2024, our school, along with thousands of others across the country, will participate in the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC is a teacher-completed census (similar to a questionnaire) which provides a comprehensive picture of how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school.
The AEDC is an Australian Government Initiative and is completed nationally every three years.
Children don’t miss any class time while the AEDC is completed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information.
The data collected through the AEDC is used by schools, communities and governments to better understand children's and families’ needs, and identify the services, resources and support they need.
AEDC data is reported at a school, community, state/territory and national level.
AEDC results for individual children are not reported and the AEDC is not used as an individual diagnostic tool.
Some teachers have found that completing the AEDC made them more aware of the needs of individual children and their class, and that the data was useful for planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary, however the AEDC relies on all schools with children in their first year of full-time school participating in the collection. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the AEDC and how it is being used to help children and families visit: www.aedc.gov.au.
If you have any questions, you can contact Sarah Abbot on sabbo6@eq.edu.au .
Just a heads up… our Prep 2025 Transition events have begun! Families who have enrolled, or who have joined our waitlist, will receive special invites to events as they occur.
Following on from the positive response from our Term 1 Principal’s School Tour, we have decided to hold a tour per term. Our next Principal’ School Tour will be on Tuesday 30 April at 4:30pm.
If you know of any family, friends or neighbours with Prep aged children in 2025, please feel free to share this information and the attached brochure so they don’t miss these special events.
Excursions and Incursions
This term we have excursions and incursions happening for most year levels. We have been transitioning to QParents as our main point of contact for consent, so we are no longer sending bulk paper copies of consent forms home for activities with a low or medium risk level. Please note, that the online consent form in QParents closes on the same date that invoices are due.
When a new consent form is generated, QParent account owners will receive a notification via email from QParents advising that it is available. Reminders will also be sent leading up to the end date for those forms not yet completed.
QParents
Have you had trouble signing up to QParents?
Initial registration needs to be completed using a PC. Once your account has been approved QParents can be accessed with a mobile device.
We are here to help to get you registered if you are still having trouble. Bring your 100 points of ID verification into the school office and we’ll help you out.
If you have already registered, but didn’t have your 100 points of ID verification, you can bring a range of documents to be sighted at the office to complete the process. Contact the office to find out what documents you could present to make up your 100 points.
Synthetic Phonics as Wondall
We are very excited to announce that all of our full-time permanent Classroom Teachers and Inclusion Teachers have attended their four days of Sounds-Write Professional Development and are now implementing the Sounds-Write approach across our school! This initiative has been supported by a significant investment by the school. Not only into the capacity building of our teachers, but also in resourcing with decodable readers.
We also thank our wonderful P & C who made a generous donation in Semester 2 last year to support our resourcing of decodable readers for our home reading program. Our Preps will be the first group to begin using these as part of their home reading activities this term!

The green collection bins for plastic drink bottles are located at each eating area around the school. Please feel free to bring in containers to recycle. Alternatively, if you want to take your containers directly to a recycler and send your refund to the school – use the code C11011831
