P&C AGM
The P&C will be holding their Annual General Meeting to appoint 2021 Executive positions on Tuesday 16 March. The P&C plays a vital role in representing the collective view of Wondall parents and contributes to strategic planning and actions of the school.
The key roles are:
* President
*Vice President
*Treasurer
*Secretary
Following the AGM, a general meeting will be held with the following key points of discussion:
- Voluntary Contribution
- Endorsement of Student Code of Conduct
Bullying No Way!
On Friday 19 March students and staff are encouraged to wear orange clothing or accessories as a sign of our commitment to ‘National Day against bullying’. Staff will be discussing with students what bullying is, how they can prevent it and what to do if they are concerned. Please ensure that any clothing/items worn are sun safe and appropriate to be worn at school (no inappropriate language, enclosed shoes etc). The following poster is a great one to use when discussing incidents with students:
School Photos
School photos will be in Week 1 of Term 2 – 20 and 21 April. Envelopes will be sent home later this term.
Prep Incursion
On Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 March, our Prep students worked with Aimee and Jane from Moreton Environmental Educational Centre to go on a bug hunt. First, we were shown how to safely use the net trays and the bug catchers. Then we went and explored the trees and bushes to see what we could find. Some of the minibeasts were hard to catch, but when everyone had one, we went to the lab to observe them. We drew them and counted their legs, this helped us identify what they were. Next, we used the microscopes to have a closer look at other minibeasts. The jewelled beetle was very popular with its shimmering green colour, so was the scorpion with its sharp tail. Finally, we took our minibeasts back to the garden to release them, making sure they could get some water, food and shelter to survive another day.
NAPLAN Online
Wondall Heights State School will be participating in NAPLAN Online this year. Students will participate in a NAPLAN School Readiness Test (SRT) on Thursday 25th March 2021 prior to the actual NAPLAN tests in May. The SRT is a familiarisation activity to help confirm each school’s technical, student and staff readiness. The SRT provides our students with the opportunity to engage in the NAPLAN platform prior to the actual NAPLAN tests in May. If you do not wish your child to participate in the SRT or NAPLAN in May please contact the office.

Street Science
Year 3A-3D participated in an incursion from Street Science on Friday 26 February. Each class participated in a workshop and then watched a science show called “Hardcore Heat”. Students completed chemical reactions to feel and measure, using thermometers, how heat can be produced and absorbed. They then tested different materials’ ability to conduct thermal energy and allow state changes.
Ethan from 3C enjoyed the show so much that he did his own research and presented it to his teacher. Below is his research about Heat Energy.
Heat Energy
Heat is a form of energy. When heat is moving it happens because of a phenomenon called heat transfer, which is the flow of energy in the form of heat. Heat transfer via movement of fluids is called convection. Another two heat transfers are conduction (energy moving through a substance from one particle to another) and radiation (energy moving against the force of insulation to get to the cold). Depending on the material of the barrier, the insulation is more or less effective.
How Styrofoam Insulates
Styrofoam is mostly made of air. That means it is a poor conductor of heat, but a great convector. It traps the flow of heat energy by storing up air in pockets. When this happens it reduces both conduction and convection and makes styrofoam a good insulator.
Code.Org
Code.org is a free coding site available to schools. They provide access to ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn computer science as part of their primary education. The sites provides a range of activities and challenges for students to solve. Wondall Heights State School is encouraging students to complete the Introduction to Computer Science course. This course requires students to learn about algorithms, variables, loops and arguments. Mr Butler has been working with some students during their lunchbreaks. We would like to congratulate: Leam B, Daniel B, Nate W, Ethan K and Dean W for successfully completing the Computer Science Course. We are looking forward to handing out many more certificates.

Building Resilience
All parents want what is best for their children. Sometimes though, in our endeavour to protect our children, we take control of a situation, and make decisions, that are not always in our child’s best interest.
Michael Grose (Parenting Educator) talks of 7 resilience robbers that reduces a child’s development of resilience.
ROBBER 1- Fight all their battles for them
This should be the last resort not the first option. We want our children to have strategies that will help them manage difficult situations.
Solution: Give kids the skills and opportunity to develop their own resourcefulness. Remember there are always 2 sides to a story. Be the consultant not the problem-solver.
ROBBER 2 - Make their problem your problem
Sometimes adults can take too much responsibility for issues that are really up to the child to work out or decide.
Solution: Know when to make their problem their problem.
ROBBER 3 - Give kids too much voice
It is easy to go overboard and allow children too much of a say in what happens to them. Remember you are the adult.
Solution: Know when to make decisions for kids and expect them to adjust and cope.
ROBBER 4 – Put unrealistic or relentless pressure on kids to perform
Expectations about success and achievement are important but they must be realistic.
Solution: Keep expectations in line with a child’s ability. Excessive pressure can create mental health issues.
ROBBER 5 – Let kids give in too easily
Solution: Encourage kids to complete what they have started and put in the best effort even if the results aren’t perfect, nor the task significant.
ROBBER 6 – Neglect to develop independence
By teaching kids the skills to look after themselves you are setting them up for life. Start early. Kids who have a sense of independence (but family readily available) feel good about themselves and their abilities.
Solution: As a parent if you weren’t around what skills would you like your child to have eg. for younger – dressing themselves, making something simple to eat, washing up, unpacking their school bag; for older – making their school lunch, cooking, cleaning, using appliances.
ROBBER 7 – Rescue kids from challenging or stretching situations
When things are outside the comfort zone we tend to want to avoid them eg. doing a presentation in front of others, school camp. When you show confidence in a child and skill them up to face challenges you will not only help them to cope but their abilities may even surprise them.
Solution: Overcoming challenges enables kids to grow and improve.
In life there are many hardships that occur at any age. By skilling up a child to deal with them effectively you will create independent children who are mentally strong and resilient, and so able to enjoy life no matter what is put in their path. Isn’t that what we want for all our children?
