This is a big welcome newsletter, so please get yourself a cuppa and read through the information.
Back to School
Operational emails were sent home regarding school access and provisions in place currently until 4 March. We again thank our families for their support in these, as we work to keep our school community safe during this time. The DOE plan can be viewed here: https://qed.qld.gov.au/covid-19/Documents/back-to-school-plan.pdf
The Department of Education has removed previous guidelines and now Frequently Asked Questions are the point of reference. From Monday 7 February, key features of the plan include:
- The suspension of school camps, excursions, assemblies, and large gatherings (please note that school sport will continue as usual)
- limiting visitors on site, with exceptions for parents and carers of students experiencing vulnerability, students attending early childhood development programs, kindergarten, Prep or Year 1
- staggered drop off times and special drop off zones
- masks supplied and strongly encouraged for students in Years 3 to 6
- mask wearing for all high school students and all staff
- rapid antigen tests (RATs) available in school for students and staff who develop symptoms while on site
- priority access to RATs for students and staff at Queensland Health testing clinics
- a range of ventilation measures including air purifiers as required
School WHS Measures
- Signage at all entry points. Please read and follow!
- QR Check ins at entry points- all visitors to sign in at the office (if not just dropping off).

- Hand sanitiser in all rooms. Wipes if using devices.
- Mask wearing as per Queensland Health guidelines and listed above.
- Increased ventilation- open classrooms and use of outdoor spaces where appropriate.
- Daily cleaning of facilities.
- Promotion of health messages to students (frequent hand washing, how to cough/sneeze).
- Promotion of physical distancing between adults.
- From 11.59pm 23 January 2022, mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations will be required for all people working or delivering a service at a school or early childhood education and care setting. This includes contractors, volunteers, regulators and auditors.
Please communicate with the school, should your child test positive with COVID 19 or is unable to attend school due to being a close contact. This will enable the school to take any necessary action and record keeping. Information on positive cases will remain confidential.
Home Readers/Library Borrowing
In line with the current back to school plan, home readers and class library borrowing will take place after 4 March. We encourage you to keep reading with your child. Please take advantage of the ebooks available at Brisbane City Council Libraries, you can find out more through the link, below. Students will continue to use reading resources in the classroom and partake in Guided Reading with careful consideration of the use and sanitisation of shared classroom resources.
2022 School Priorities
Each year, schools identify priority areas that will shape the direction of the teaching and learning in the school. The table below provides a summary of our key priority areas and these will be unpacked with our school community throughout the year. Our priorities this year, build on our progress in 2021.
To support collegial engagement and student outcomes, the school will be providing teachers with an additional 30 minutes of release time each week which will see teachers working along side year level coaches on school priority and curriculum implementation.
Curriculum and Pedagogy Every student succeeding in their learning Every teacher succeeding in their teaching Target: 90% of students achieving A-C in English 55% of students achieve A-B in English |

Wellbeing Students and staff connected and supported |
|
This week, the theme in classrooms is ‘Connection’. The focus is about developing classroom and school expectations, relationship and team building. Students will be reviewing our PBL expectations, setting up their class routines and working with peers.
In 2022 we will have the following specialist offerings:
- Year 3-6: Languages- Japanese (weekly lessons)
- Prep-Year 6: Technology (Design and Digital, weekly lessons)
- Weekly PE lessons
- Weekly Arts lessons with specialist teacher for (Music, Dance and Drama)
For student safety during school hours, all gates to our school are locked. The Wondall Road pedestrian gate- closest to the Administration Block remains unlocked as a point of entry. Please ensure that you latch it closed again after opening.
Facilities
Current Works:
- Pool shell and surrounding deck area refurbishment- this is approximately 2 weeks behind schedule due to rain, but final stages will now be the painting of the pool, which then needs to set for a week.
- Arcade Building- this is in the final stages before being handed to the school for occupation. Defects are being corrected and the school will be able to access the green space from tomorrow.
2022 School Council
Nominations are being sought for members of parent body who would like to be part of the School Council. The School Council sits separately to our P&C with a focus on the strategic operations of the school. The council is comprised of staff, parent and community members.
Following nomination, a voting process will occur. If you would like to nominate for a position or for more information, please email- principal@wondallheightsss.eq.edu.au by Monday 14 February.
Active School TravelIn 2022 we are excited to be part of the Active School Travel (AST) program and look forward to working with Brisbane City Council and our local community on ways for our students to be more active with their school travel. There are some exciting events/activities being planned and trophies offered for the most active class. Mrs Abbot (Deputy Principal) will be chairing this committee with additional members sought. The first committee meeting will be held on 7 March, with our first community AST event scheduled for 18 March. To offer your support to this program, please contact Mrs Sarah Abbot sabbo6@eq.edu.au
Cross CountryWith the delayed access to the swimming pool, HPE lessons will commence with a focus on Cross Country. This will include conducting our Year 4-6 Cross-Country carnival on 17/2/2022, which will be held with rolling age cohorts to reduce gathering of students. Unfortunately, this will be a student only event with current restrictions in place. Swimming will then occur in the remaining weeks of the term for Year 1-6 students. A P-3 Cross-Country carnival will be held early Term 2. Please see sports news, below, for more information from Mr Bloxsom.
Class Information SessionsA new year brings new opportunities and learning experiences for your children. It is so important that your child is at school everyday unless they are sick or there is some other significant reason. We want to ensure all of our students have the best education and regular attendance can support this.
If your child is away please do the following:
- phone the office absence line 3906 6460
- email the class teacher or office (admin@wondallheightsss.eq.edu.au)
Where possible, limit appointments within school hours and schedule holidays for the school breaks.
If you ever need help with supporting your child’s attendance at school, please call the office and we can assist.
Uniform Policy
We take pride in our appearance at Wondall Heights State School. Students wear their uniform every day with pride.
We are a Sun Smart school and require students to wear a Wondall Heights wide brimmed hat when outside. Caps are not permitted. We have a No Hat – No Play rule. Jewellery, except for a watch and sleepers or stud earrings, is not permitted.
Students are expected to wear their sky-blue striped shirt or school dress when not a PE day.
The sports uniform should only be worn on days when they have a scheduled Physical Education lesson, to interschool sports and other school sporting events.
Students are encouraged to wear their house colour on sports carnival days.
Sharing of Food
There are a number of reasons why Wondall Heights State School does not promote the sharing of food, this includes birthdays/celebrations.
- Food Allergies – there are an increasing number of students who are presenting with complex food allergies. It is up to the individual parents/caregivers as to what they choose for their child to eat in a day – school staff will not be responsible for distributing food to students.
- ‘Smart Choices’ – schools have an important role in promoting healthy eating to students and providing an environment that supports a healthy lifestyle. Please refer to ‘Smart Choices Strategy’.Eg: Whilst Zooper Doopers fall into the Amber category, again it is a parent/caregiver’s choice as to how often and when they choose for their child to consume these types of foods.
- COVID – in line with current health directives, we are limiting the sharing of items between students, where we can.
- We will not use food as rewards at school.
- Any foods given out by the school will be communicated in advance to families as per Red Days or in the curriculum, outlining the purpose and ingredients to be used.
With all these factors in mind, the following school-based decision has been made: Wondall Heights State School does not promote the sharing of food, this includes for birthdays/celebrations. Staff will not distribute food to students. We ask that you do not send food products for sharing at school
Class Information Sessions
This year, teachers will email class operational information directly, in lieu of the traditional information session afternoon (restrictions in place). Parents are encouraged to contact teachers, to discuss any concerns with their children.
We look forward to working with the Wondall community in 2022 and achieving positive outcomes for all of our students.
Swimming Permission/Swimming Term 1
Swimming permission forms will be sent home for completion and will need to be returned by Week 5. Preps do not swim in Term 1. All Year 1-6 students start swimming in Week 6 of this term. Swim permissions need to be returned to the class teacher or the office in order to participate. Swimming is starting later to allow our pool refurbishment to conclude and will run until the end of term 1.
For swimming students require the following items:
Togs – BOYS: Traditional, Half Cut or Jammer style tight fitting
(No Board Shorts as we are not using surfboards or body boards.)
GIRLS: One piece from shoulder to bottom.
(No 2 piece please.)
Sun shirts – Long or short sleeve as desired. This can also be built into the togs.
Swimming Cap – Latex or Silicone to cover all hair on head. No cap, no swim.
Towel – To get dry afterwards
Spare underwear – Because an extra pair is always needed.
Bag – To put all items in.
Water Bottle – Because we sweat even though we don’t feel it in the pool water.
Optional items include:
Goggles – That fit swimmers face. No snorkels required.
Ear plugs or Ear bands – If using, student must be able to place in and/or over ears themselves.
Sunscreen – If students have own sunscreen that they would like to reapply before and/or after.
Cross Country Carnivals
Years 4-6 will have their Cross Country Carnival on Thursday 17/02/2022 in Week 4 this term. Due to current government covid plans unfortunately we can not have spectators at this event. Students can wear house uniform on this day and will complete one race in their age group and gender. There will be water available to them on course but will be encouraged to bring their hat and water bottle with them to the oval for use before and after their races.
Years 3-Prep Cross Country Carnivals have been postponed until later in the year.
Schools with Pools Carnival
At this stage this carnival will go ahead as it is scheduled beyond the finish date of the current government covid plan. Students are selected on the basis of their swimming at school carnivals last year in age groups and genders. Selected students will be notified by the end of Week 4. Notes will come home with selected students.
District Swimming
Unfortunately, the Bayside District Swimming Trials have been cancelled due to some schools not having enough time to prepare swimmers for the event. High schools generally have their carnivals in Week 1 or 2 of the year. As this hasn’t occurred in 2022, the executive of the district had to cancel as opposed to postpone. The Metropolitan East swimming trials are still proceeding and students who have achieved qualifying times can paper nominate to represent Bayside at the trials. Students who have achieved times will be notified by Mr. Bloxsom by the end of week 3.
Hi! We are Daemyn and Harper and we are the School Captains for 2022. We are excited to have this important role in our school of representing our fellow students. This year, our focus will be encouraging students to be kind and promoting positive behaviour. We can do this by setting a good example as leaders. We know and understand that being a leader is not just about having a badge, it is about committing to our role in the school community. We always try our hardest to represent the school inside and out, but there is still always room for improvement.
We are glad all our captains at Wondall are following their roles. Our school leaders are not just captains, they are also our seniors! We look forward to sharing more throughout the year on the different activities’ students can be involved in at school.

Guidance Corner with Miss Sherry
We all worry sometimes. Worrying is a normal emotion, however when our worries grow or don’t go away, they can become difficult to handle.
The one thing worries don’t like!
Worrying is the worst when you feel you have no control over the situation. AND, the one thing worries don’t like - is to be spoken about! When we bottle our worries up inside, they become bigger and even multiply. However, when we speak about our worries to someone we trust, and who will listen, those worries tend to get smaller and sometimes they can even disappear.
How to cope with worries:
Talk it out with someone you can trust |
Try to listen and understand what is happening and how they are feeling. Talk it out with them, sometimes worries are based on wrong information that doesn’t make sense.
|
Allow some calm down time and mindfulness in different ways
|
Sometimes children just need some calm down time on their own. Mindful colouring, connect with nature, cuddle a pet, draw
|
Learn some coping strategies
|
Colouring, Drawing, Walking, Listen to music
|
Have a lovely week.
