PBL- ’Wondall Learners are Responsible for their own learning’
With just a few days left of Term 2, we want to thank all of our community for another amazing term of learning, fun and celebrations in our school. The last fortnight has seen cultural drumming experiences, free dress, sporting events, band performances, Learning Celebrations, camps, PBL rewards and Under 8’s Day still to come. We wish all of our families a relaxing holiday break and look forward to Term 3 commencing on Monday 10 July.
REPORTING PROCESS
Semester 1 reports will be emailed home to parents on Wednesday 21 June. If you do not receive your child’s report by Thursday, please 1) check you junk/spam boxes 2) contact the office and they can verify your email/resend the report.
When reviewing your child’s report, remember that ‘C’ means that your child is working at the year level standard. Importantly, review their behaviour and effort grades and the suggested goals to support their learning in Semester 2.
SCHOOL CAMP
Across this week, our students in Years 5&6 are enjoying their respective camps at Currumbin Valley (Y5) and Boulder Creek (Y6). Camps are a great way for students to develop their independence, team work and resilience whilst developing positive relationships with their peers and teachers. We want to sincerely thank our staff who have supported the camps, so generously giving up their own time with their families, to make these opportunities available for our students.
On Wednesday and Friday afternoon, we will have multiple buses returning from the camp locations. The Stop, Drop and Go, access will be restricted to provide a safe location for the unpack of the buses. Please be mindful of this with afternoon pick up.
TRACK CARNIVAL
Last week we held our rolling track carnival. Congratulations to all students for their participation. The winning house was Trojans! We thank Mr Bloxsom for his tireless efforts in planning these days and our grounds team for the marking and set up. Thank you also to the parents (and grandparents) who helped pack up!
To provide some context, we have moved to rolling carnivals to increase student participation. By conducting some of the activities during class lessons, carnival day is reduced to the main events which all students participate. This results in increased participation, decreased off task behaviours and increased school attendance.
SCHOOL REVIEW
Every Queensland state school is reviewed by the School and Region Reviews (SRR) branch at least once every 4 years. The reviews play an important part in how the department supports school improvement. They provide schools with independent feedback, tailored to their context and needs.
Our school is scheduled to have our next review in Week 1 of Term 3, from Wednesday-Friday. During the review period you may be approached at school by a reviewer to get your feedback on our school. I encourage you to chat with the reviewers and share your thoughts on our school and our next steps for continued improvement.
NAIDOC 2023
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year, to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
Our school will be celebrating NAIDOC with classroom and lunch time events for students in Week 1. We will also hold a special parade on Friday 14 July 2023 at 9am, which will include a smoking ceremony and dance presentation, as we officially open our yarning circle.
During the holidays, a community event will be held at Musgrave Park on 7 July. For more information check the following links https://www.musgraveparkffd.com/
UNDER EIGHT’S DAY
Our annual Under 8’s Day will occur on Thursday 22 June 2023. Please save the date and spread the word far, we would love to see parents and future Wondall students attend. On the morning there will be lots of activities for children and even a food stand for parents!
PBL Video- New Lunchtime Expectations:
Over the last two weeks of this term, our school is trialling playing first and eating second during our lunch breaks. This is to help reduce students entering classes straight from play, often resulting in behaviours occurring. When students have the time to sit, eat and settle after play, we are hoping to see smoother transitions back into learning resulting in less behaviours during class time. The new bell times are as follows:

Notice of Intention to Attend Wondall Heights State School in 2024
We are currently looking at Wondall Heights State School’s planning needs for the 2024 school year. Part of this planning is considering the number of students we will have enrolled in the school. If your child is of Prep age for the 2024 school year and you are considering enrolment at Wondall Heights State School, can you please let us know your intentions by contacting the school. This is not binding and the catchment area and enrolment requirements still apply. The enrolment process will begin in Term 3 and will be communicated shortly. Early forward planning will help to make 2024 as successful as possible, for all our students.
Enrolment Process
In catchment students can currently enrol at the office during office opening hours.
Out-of-catchment students can join the wait list, please contact the office.
A decision will be made for out-of-catchment enrolments in Term 3, you will be invited to attend the Prep Enrolment Sessions in September if you are successful in securing a place at Wondall Heights State School.
Prep Enrolment Sessions will consist of a group interview where parents will be presented information and asked to fill in questionnaires whilst their children interact with our teachers, in a group setting. From there, enrolled 2024 Prep children will be invited to multiple orientation days where they will meet our Prep staff, use our Prep spaces and begin to become familiar with each other. This Prep transition process is vital in preparing your child for a great start to school!
Please share this information with family and friends living in the catchment area!
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Our focus for the next two weeks is, ’Wondall Learners are responsible for their own learning’. The objective of this focus is for students to learn the importance of on task behaviours in relation to accountability of student learning. Our PBL lessons will provide students with effective strategies to assist students in increasing on task behaviours.
In class, students will discuss,
- Why is it important to be responsible for your own learning? Including, why should I be using my learning time to its fullest?
- Non examples of the expected behaviour and why these behaviours are happening.
- What does ‘being responsible for my own learning’ look like, sound like and feel like? Including, strategies to use within the classroom.
Students will explore what it is to be an engaged and focussed learner. They will identify on task behaviours, including, active listening when required, peer support, following instructions, maintaining a quiet work environment when necessary and actively participating by asking questions or seeking work clarification. To facilitate this, a range of strategies will be discussed, including, Zones Of Regulation, calming corner, fostering a growth mindset, setting personal goals, asking for help and utilising Dougie Stamps as a form of recognition. This fortnight’s focus builds upon our previous focus ‘Wondall learners are respectful when they follow instructions’.
PBL 5000 Dougie Rewards Dress Up Day:
Wondall was a ‘sea of green’ last Monday! Our students wore green to show support for our Eco-Marines partnerships and Environment Captains. It was great to see staff and students sharing in this reward day!

It’s a big challenge to complete in one day and they always seem to rise to it no matter what! Well done! Encouragement to all students that participated, helping their house team achieve. Thank you as well to the support from parents and spectators on the day.

Congratulations to our victorious teacher coaches and all their teacher/coach teams in their plights at sport this Semester 1 season. From our perspective, from beginning to end the students learned their sports, built teamwork, understood opposition, dealt with wins/losses and draws, had fun and stayed fit during their involvement.
Year 6 Boys Football may have some progression games starting early next semester. Mr. Haworth and Mr. Bloxsom will inform the boys as the information comes through.
A reminder that jerseys worn at Rugby League and team kits worn at finals need to be returned to your teacher/coach or the office this week as some staff may be on camp.
Stay fit during the holidays. Mr Bloxsom
