Well Done P&C
A huge well done and thank you to our community body and P&C for the recent conduct of the Bake and BBQ stall. It was great to see so many donated tasty treats and BBQ items. Thanks to all who made items for, or volunteered at the stall, with a whopping $2800 raised for our school!

School Opinion Survey
Please see the attached infographic which highlights our most positive response items for the 2023 School Opinion Survey. The results of the survey will be used to continue to improve our school as we move into 2024. We welcome your feedback and suggestions. These can be sent via email- admin@wondalheightsss.eq.edu.au calling the office 3906 6444 or come along to a P&C meeting.
Swimming
Swimming has kicked off this week. Please ensure that your child has all of the required items named (swim shirt, bathers, towel, swim cap). To increase visibility in the water, all students will be given a red cap to put over their swim caps. As this is the first time for many of our swimmers, please spend some time having them practise getting changed in and out of the their togs to speed up the after swim process.
Pool volunteers are still being sought, if you can help (please!), there is a session sign-up sheet in the front office foyer, or call/email the office (3906 6444 or admin@wondallheightsss.eq.edu.au) or Mr Bloxsom (sblox5@eq.edu.au ). Thanks to those who have already generously offered their time.
2024 Booklists
Please find the links to the 2024 Booklists, below. You are welcome to take the list to your preferred provider. Many providers will shop and package the booklist for you. 2024 Booklists are STARTER BOOKLISTS only. If additional items are required throughout the school year due to loss or consumption, your child’s class teacher will provide you with a replacement list.
Please note:
We have removed handwriting textbooks and added extra writing books / scrapbooks to accommodate for Handwriting and Synthetic Phonics. You may also notice an increase in whiteboard markers, as students increasingly use their whiteboards for these learning activities.
- We have added extra books to accommodate for specialist lessons.
- Prior to the end of the 2023 school year, your child will bring home a Stationery Inventory Form to give you an indication of the condition of retainable items (e.g. headphones) and excess materials that can be used in 2024.
- Brands listed are an example, for your reference. The school accepts alternative similar brands.
- Please ensure exercise books have the correct ruling and are suited for the year level required.
- ALL ITEMS are to be labelled and brought to school on the first day of the 2024 school year.
2024 Student Leadership Applications
2024 Student Leadership Process has progressed to the next stage. All eligible students have created a poster and it has been displayed in the Arena for the entire school to view. The next step is School Captain interviews. These will take place on Thursday and Friday this week and will be held with Mr Wright, Mrs Cocciolone and Mr Flack. After the interview, successful students will be asked to create and present a short 2-minute speech during Week 4, to present to Year 4, 5 and 6 students. Parents are welcome to attend. More information regarding the speeches to come out later in the week.
Day for Daniel
Day for Daniel is a National Day of Action hosted by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation (DMF) to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention. Held on the last Friday of October each year, it is about educating children and adults about keeping kids safe through child safety and protection initiatives. 'Wear Red and Educate' is the theme for the day.
The objectives of Day for Daniel are:
- to educate children regarding their personal safety and empower them to 'Recognise, React and Report' when they feel something is not right.
- to raise awareness about child safety and protection, and to promote a safer community for children.
- to educate and equip individuals and communities with knowledge and skills to understand child safety and protection requirements and empower them to take action.
- to honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe.
Wondall will be recognising Day for Daniel on Friday 27 October and will be inviting students and staff to wear a red shirt (hair accessories also ok) on this day. We will also be hosting a Day for Daniel Walk as part of our Active School Travel program. Please see details in the poster, attached.

World Teacher's Day
Next Friday we celebrate World Teachers’ Day. We are fortunate at Wondall to have dedicated teachers who constantly strive to enrich the lives of our students in positive ways. This Friday, please reach out to the teachers in the school and share a positive message of appreciation.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
PBL- Week 3 and 4 PBL focus; Wondall learners respect others’ learning
Our focus for the next two weeks is, ’Wondall Learners respect others’ learning’. The objective of this focus is to maximise learning time by fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and focused. In classrooms we will explore the reasons why respecting others' learning is key to success. We will delve into effective strategies for managing behaviours that might hinder the learning experience, ensuring a classroom where every student can thrive. Students will have the opportunity to review and discuss a variety of calming strategies, such as utilizing the Calming Space, engaging with the ZOR Tool-box, incorporating Fidget Tools, Time-Out Pass, and encouraging students to Ask for help. This approach ensures that students, when not in the green zone, are equipped with a range of choices that promote personal calmness without disrupting their peers' learning.
Book Fair
Book Fair has arrived at our Library! Students will have the opportunity to visit with their class on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday to look at the books and create their wish list.
Books can be purchased online by going to scholastic.com.au/payment and following the instructions on the back of the wish list. Students then bring the completed online purchase receipt filled in on the back of the wish list to Book Fair and we will give them their books. Novelty items, value packs and posters can not be purchased online, they must be purchased in Book Fair. Please note, Book Fair is not the same as Book Club, but a direct payment to Scholastic when purchasing online.
The last copy of books on display in Book Fair have a ‘last copy’ label on them, and are for perusal only. These books can be ordered at Book Fair and will arrive at school a week or two after the Fair closes.
Book Fair is open to parents and students before and after school at the following times.

Developmental Language Disorder Day
Many of you will have heard the term Developmental Language Disorder or DLD. This Friday (20th October) is DLD day! Here are some things you need to know about DLD.
- DLD is a significant difficulty in learning, understanding and using language.
- The term DLD is the current label and replaces other terms like speech language impairment, specific language impairment, and language delay (to name a few). When you hear these terms, think DLD!
- DLD is an invisible disability because it presents as difficulties which are not always obvious to a non-specialist. Difficulties include but are not limited to: smaller vocabulary, difficulty constructing sentences, and difficulties organising conversations.
- DLD is estimated to affect 1 in 14 students, meaning that there are likely to be one or two students in each classroom at Wondall Heights SS experiencing language difficulties.
- Children with DLD are vulnerable to mental health problems including internalising behaviours e.g., anxiety and depression, and externalising behaviours e.g., aggression. Children with extensive behaviour history records, may be disengaging due to an underlying DLD.
- Whilst DLD affects spoken language, children with DLD will often have difficulties with written language (reading, spelling and writing). If you can’t say it, you can’t write it.
This year’s campaign for DLD is DLD around the World. The campaign asks teachers to understand that DLD affects students regardless of age, gender, spoken language or ethnicity. It is found in every country and every language.
If you would like to know more about DLD, please feel free to meet me for a chat or access information via this website https://radld.org/about/dld/
Parents and Carers please help support a sustainable environment by promoting Wrapper Free Wednesdays! Our Eco-Marines take time each Wednesday to observe which classes are the most sustainable in supporting this cause. Each fortnight there is a chosen winner and this is announced at assembly!
School Crossing Supervisor
Janine Hayden has been Wondall’s crossing supervisor for the last 10 years but has now decided to retire and spend time with her grandchildren. We are so grateful and appreciative of the hours that Janine has worked to keep our children safe before and after school. We send best wishes to Janine and her family and know that she will be greatly missed.
